Cambria-Rowe Business College Picks OpenDNS for Web Content Filtering across Two Campuses
Switch From Internal DNS Servers to OpenDNS Ensures Filtering is Always On, Always Up To Date
Aug 19, 2010 — OpenDNS, the world’s largest and fastest-growing provider of Internet navigation and security services that make networks safer, faster, smarter and more reliable, today announced Cambria-Rowe Business College has deployed OpenDNS’s cloud-based recursive DNS service for Web content filtering and multi-location management. Cambria-Rowe Business College is a two-campus business college in Pa., which provides each student enrolled with their own laptop as part of its curriculum.
The challenge facing Cambria-Rowe was that their previous filtering didn’t update automatically, so unless a specific website address was known, it couldn’t be blocked. OpenDNS’ 57 categories of content available for filtering — which are updated constantly — ensure content filtering is always on and always effective for Cambria-Rowe students. All that’s needed is to choose a category like Adult or Academic Fraud, and the filtering will be applied and constantly updated.
“Thanks to OpenDNS’ category blocking, making sure our students have a safer Internet experience is much easier,” explained Nathan Strong, a computer technician at In-Shore Technologies, who oversaw the OpenDNS deployment.
Another benefit of using OpenDNS for Cambria-Rowe Business College is that managing networks on two campuses, 30 miles apart, has become a simpler process. Updating settings requires only Web access — not an on-site technician.
“If we decide to block a specific site or category, we can make the change once and have it added to all campuses at one time, or make changes on a per-campus basis from one location,” said Strong.
